Can You Forward Work Emails to Your Personal Email Account?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.
If an email relates specifically to you—such as a disciplinary invitation, investigation outcome, grievance correspondence, performance management documentation, occupational health reports, or other employment-related communications—it may be reasonable to retain a copy for your own records, particularly where a workplace dispute has arisen or is likely to arise.
However, that does not mean you can simply forward everything from your work email.
You should never remove confidential business information, commercially sensitive documents, customer data, or personal information relating to other employees unless you have a lawful basis to do so. Doing so could expose you to disciplinary action or create separate legal issues.
It's also important to remember that your employer will generally be entitled to access and review emails held on your company email account, provided they do so in accordance with company policies and data protection law. A work email account is not the same as a private email account.
If you're involved in a workplace dispute, think carefully before deleting emails or forwarding documents. What you keep—and how you keep it—can make a significant difference later.
